Light-footed Clapper Rail seen at Inner Bolsa

On August 17, 2009, Su Anderson of Seal Beach heard a light-footed clapper rail calling at 6:30am from an area south of the Bolsa Chica parking area off of PCH.  Later at 9:30am she heard it call again from the same area and seconds later a response call came from north side of the parking area, confirming that there were at least two individuals present.  

She shot this video of the rail that was north of the parking area.

Sightings of this bird are rare due to loss of habitat associated with coastal development and oil extraction activites over the past 80 years.  An element of the Bolsa Chica Lowlands Restoration Project has been the transplant of cordgrass (Spartina foliosa), the preferred habitat of the clapper rail, at may locations throughout the Full Tidal Basin.  Cordgrass is slow to become established, so it will be several years before suitable habitat is available to provide nesting habitat, but the presence of clapper rails in the adjacent marsh gives hope that they will be able to once again breed at Bolsa Chica in the near future.
