Frequently Asked Questions
The Amigos de Bolsa Chica website provides detailed answers to questions about the history of Bolsa Chica and access opportunities. Link to Amigos FAQ page. We answer some other questions below.
What plants and animals use the restored areas of Bolsa Chica? A 10-year biological monitoring program has been under way since 2007 to document the development of the restored wetlands. Link to lists of observed animals, or link to the report page to download the full monitoring reports.
Can I visit the restored portion of Bolsa Chica? Although much of the restored areas of the wetlands are closed to public access to protect the sensitive species that live there, there are many areas that allow great viewing. A small parking lot along PCH leads to a boardwalk across Inner Bolsa Bay, which joins a trail that runs along the western edge of the full tidal basin. From this trail you can view the nesting colony where terns and plovers nest each spring, the tidal basin and its mudflats, and Rabbit Island, where salt marsh habitat supports nesting by the state endangered Belding's Savannah sparrow. The trail leads north to two overlooks, where benches are available with great views of the basin and fabulous birding opportunities. Great views of the restored marshes on the inner part of Bolsa Chica, known as the muted tidal basins, can be had by continuing inland along the trail. The trail lies on the south levee of Wintersburg Channel, providing an elevated view of the salt marsh.
Are dogs allowed on the trails at Bolsa Chica? No. Bolsa Chica is an ecological reserve, and the presence of dogs can be disruptive or harmful to the wildlife in the reserve.
